Lot Essay

This jade hilt belongs to a small group of known silver-inlaid jade hilts which can be attributed to Aurangabad, Deccan and dated to the early 18th century. It includes an example in the Otto Petersen Collection, exhibited at the David Collection in Copenhagen; one in the British Museum (OA 7212.30883), three were exhibited at Spink (24 April - 10 May 1980, lots 36 and 37 and in their 1995 catalogue, Visions of the Orient : Indian and Islamic works of Art, p. 37, no. 22. Another example is published in Simon Ray, March 2004, cat. 26.
