Lot Essay

This portrait of the Nawab of Awadh Shuja' al-Dawla very probably derives from an original painted by Tilly Kettle in 1772 of which a copy by the Indian artist Mihr Chand is in the Victoria and Albert Museum. For a discussion on these portraits, see Mildred Archer, Company Paintings; Indian Paintings of the British Period, London, 1992. cat.88, pp.116-117.
