Opaque pigments heightened with gold on paper, the ruler rides a prancing stallion, he holds the reins and a huqqa pipe, the horse is adorned with colourful tassels and surrounded by attendants, the sky with stylised clouds, later inscription at top, mounted, framed and glazed

Lot Essay

A very similar portrait, depicting Thakur Bakhtawar Singh of Auwa is in the British Museum and dated to 1807 (Roda Ahluwalia, Rajput Painting, Romantic, Divine and Courtly Art from India, London, 2008, cat.55, pp.94-95).
