Lot Essay

The engraved motif under the base of an elephant and a tree is the maker's mark. High quality bowls made in Lucknow and Burma often carry a distinctive signature in the form of a flower, bird or an animal motif to the base. The present bowl, with its fine chasing and movement of the subject is a good example of the "Elephant and Tree" maker whose works are generally of high quality. For a similar example see Wynyard Wilkonson, Indian Silver 1858-1947: Decorative Silver from the Indian Sub-Continent and Burma Made by Local Craftsmen in Western Forms, 1999 p.136, pl.230.
