FIRST EDITION. 'ONE OF THE MOST SIGNIFICANT SOURCES FOR SEVENTEENTH-CENTURY RUSSIAN HISTORY', including the war with the Ottoman Empire (ODNB). Gordon's manuscript diary, preserved in Moscow's Military-Historical Archive, was translated into German for this edition; a Russian language edition did not appear until 1890, and it has never been published in English in its entirety. Gordon was one of Peter the Great's favourite generals; the Tsar visited him constantly during Gordon's final illness, and was by his side when he died. An excellent, uncut and unopened copy. RARE: ABPC and AE record no copy sold at auction. (3)
