FIRST EDITION OF ONE OF DOYLE'S BEST KNOWN WORKS, with the misprint 'you' for 'your' on the third line of page 13. One of the first encore performances of Sherlock Holmes after his disappearance over Reichenbach Falls in 1893's 'The Final Problem'. Doyle described this literary return as the 'inevitable relapse after repentance'. The story is possibly based on that of the Black Hound of Hergest, associated with the Vaughan family in Herefordshire. Locke 52; De Waal 87; Green & Gibson A26.
