ASHENDENE PRESS -- BOCCACCIO, Giovanni (1313-1375). Il Decameron. Chelsea: Ashendene Press, 1920. 2° (410 x 280mm). Title of Proemio, introduction and headings of each 'Giornata' printed in blue capitals, those of the 'Novelle' and shoulder-notes in red, large blue initials at beginning of each 'Novella' specially designed by Graily Hewitt. Original linen-backed blue boards, paper label on spine (a few scuff marks). Provenance: William Henry Smith, 3rd Viscount Hambleden (1903-1948; book label).
LIMITED EDITION. The printing of the book commenced in October 1913, but, owing to World War I, was not completed until December 1920. One of 105 copies printed on Batchelor paper with Bugle watermark of the same size and quality of that used for the folio Dante (Hornby XXIV). Only 80 copies on paper were offered for sale and another 6 copies were printed on vellum. Hornby XXIX.
