A prop eye patch worn by John Wayne as Rooster Cogburn in the 1969 Paramount film True Grit, the eye patch with cut-out eye hole covered in black gauze with black composite leather tie-on strap; accompanied by a typescript letter regarding the provenance from Howard Koch, the letter on From the desk of Howard W. Koch headed stationery, dated 26 October, 1978, telling the recipient, Mrs. Pete Rozelle, I am enclosing eye patch worn by John Wayne in TRUE GRIT and also two Academy Award caps for the 50th anniversary which are collector's items..., 1p. This eye patch still shows sign of make-up residue on the inside of the patch. Multiple patches were hand-made for the film by John Wayne's costumier, Luster Bayless, who recalls that Duke...neeeded a fresh patch every day. Every morning he'd check the thing to see if there was any makeup inside it.

According to the vendor, this eye patch was obtained at an auction of film memorabilia in New York in the late 1970s. The accompanying letter implies that this eye patch was something sourced by Howard W. Koch for the auction on behalf of the organiser, Mrs. Pete Rozelle. Howard W. Koch was a film Producer responsible for a string of hit movies and was President of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences from 1977 to 1979. Pete Rozelle was Commissioner of the NFL from 1960 to 1989.
