painted maroon and natural, the cylindrical pieces of slight baluster outline, carved and drilled with simple geometric ornament, the knights with horses heads modelled with reins, the pawns with clenched fist finials holding daggers, possibly late 19th century -- king 4½in. (11.5cm), pawn 2 3/8in. (6cm)
