A pair of Levi Strauss & Co. cut-off jeans, with hand-painted design by Leslie Hamel, the inside waistband hand-signed Leslie Hamel, Los Angeles, additionally annotated in black felt pen on the left leg with a doodle of a dancing man by Keith Haring and signed K. Haring xxx, the jeans owned by Madonna and worn by her on various occasions, 1989-1990, including onstage during a benefit evening Don't Bungle The Jungle, Brooklyn Academy Of Music, New York, 24 May, 1989, when she appeared on stage with Sandra Bernhard to sing a rendition of I Got You Babe; accompanied by a document concerning the provenance from Madonna's publicist, Liz Rosenberg; and a magazine Cosmopolitan, 2000, featuring an image of Madonna wearing the jeans (3)

Lot Essay

Madonna is also pictured wearing these jeans during a night out with Warren Beatty, circa January, 1990 and prior to a concert during the Blonde Ambition Tour at Meadowlands Arena, New Jersey, 21 June, 1990. She also appeared on the front cover of People magazine wearing the jeans, 11 December, 1989.

According to the designer of these jeans, Leslie Hamel, Madonna asked her to make a matching pair for Sandra Bernhard for the Don't Bungle The Jungle event. Keith Haring also attended the benefit evening and, according to Hamel, it was during this evening that Haring added his doodle to the jeans and signed it.
