red stained and natural, depicting Russians versus Cirassians, kings enthroned wearing crown and turban respectively, the vizier a standing warrior, bishops as sailing ships, the knights on rearing horses, rooks as elephants, the white elephants with mahouts, pawns as foot soldiers, late 18th century -- king 3in. (7.7cm), pawn 2 3/8in. (6cm), with a Russian bone veneered box, of rectanguar form, the sloping cover and sides with beaded borders, the silk lined interior compartmented for the pieces, 18th century -- 10½in.
