FINE COPY OF A WORK CONTAINING PLATES THAT "ARE VERY IMPORTANT TO STUDENTS OF WEST INDIAN FLORA" (Hunt). "This is a Plumier first edition brought out a half a century after the great French botanist's death" (Hunt). Father Plumier made three visits to the Americas; he died as he was about to set out on a fourth expedition. He left about 6,000 drawings which are now in the Muséum d'Histoire Naturelle, Paris. The present work was based on a set of copies of a portion of these drawings made by Claude Aubriet for Boerhaave in 1733. "In his preface Burman relates how the materials descended into his hands. Unfortunately, Burman knew only these illustrations and was unacquainted with Plumier's descriptions in Paris... Burmann gives Plumier's original names in the descriptions, but adds those of his own time, keying them to Linnaeus' works when he can." (Hunt). Cleveland Collections 440, HA Copy this copy; Hunt 554; Nissen BBI 1547; Stafleu & Cowan IV,8069.
