HAMILTON'S RETAINER FROM A POWERFUL CLIENT. How much were Alexander Hamilton's legal services worth to the prominent Livingston family? This receipt acknowledges payment of a retainer: "Received New York June 8th 1786 of Robert C. Livingston esquire Twenty five dollars as Retainer for the manor of Livingston." Hamilton's relations with the Livingston's were not always smooth. His in-laws, the Schuylers, were rivals to the Livingston clan, and in 1789 Robert R. Livingston lost out the coveted post of Treasury Secretary to Hamilton. When he tried gain a place on the Supreme Court instead, another Hamilton ally blocked his path, John Jay. Hamilton's relations with his client permanently cooled as a result.
