BELLA, Stefano della (1610-1664), illustrator -- SGRILLI, Bernardo Sansone (fl. 1733-1755). Descrizione della regia villa, fontane, e fabbriche di Pratolino. Florence: Tartini and Franchi for the Stamperia Granducale, 1742.

2o (358 x 248 mm). 12 double-page etched plans and views, 6 by della Bella and 6 by Sgrilli, etched head- and tail-piece and two initials (some pale spotting). Contemporary Italian paper-backed decorated wrappers; cloth folding case. Provenance: acquired from Marlborough Rare Books, 1985.

A FINE COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION, including an important series of etchings by della Bella of the famous fountains and gardens at Pratolino. The Medici villa Pratolino was demolished in 1824, and the gardens remodeled during the 19th-century. All that remains of the original vision is Giambologna's gigantic statue of Appennino. The plates are all in their second state with numbers added. The first of della Bella's plates has an engraved title added beneath, a state not recorded by de Vesme Massar. They include the extraordinary tree-house with a dinner party in progress in the branches, the grotto and the surprise fountains by Buontalenti. Berlin Kat. 2699; de Vesme Massar 838-843.
