[CARDUCCI, Alessandro (Mid-17th Century]. Il mondo festeggiante, balletto a cauallo fatto ... per le reali nozze de'serenissimi principi Cosimo terzo di Toscana, e Margherita Luisa, d'Orleans. Florence: Stamperia di S.A.S., 1661.

4o (226 x 170 mm). 3 engraved plates by Stefano Della Bella after the designs of Alessandro Carducci (some old tape reinforcements along folds on verso). (I1 with lower corner renewed). Contemporary Italian vellum gilt (one corner chipped). Provenance: acquired from E.P. Goldschmidt, 1982.

A large copy of a full account by Carducci of the celebrations surrounding the marriage of Cosimo III de Medici (1642-1723) and Marguerite Louise d'Orléans (1645-1721) on June 20, 1661. It was Alessandro Carducci who designed the elaborate equestrian pageant around the theme of Atlas; one of its novelties was having the giant figure of Atlas sing. The pageant was staged behind the Palazzo Pitti (now Boboli gardens), opening with a parade of chariots representing the continents of Europe, Africa, America and Asia, and ending with tournaments and an equestrian ballet, the movements of which are detailed in the engravings. Ferdinando Tacca is named as engineer. The songs by Giovanni Andrea Moniglia with engravings by Stefano della Bella. As usual, the text begins on page 7. BL 17th-Century Italian I, p. 189; Clubb 616; De Vesme-Massar 70-72; Marchetti 84; Moreni I, 217; Ruggieri 503; Vinet 604.
