8o (177 x 114 mm.). Engraved frontispiece by Sturt, 46 full-page illustrations. (Some minor mostly marginal spotting and staining.) Contemporary English gold-tooled morocco, spine gilt with raised bands, edges gilt (light fading and rubbing to spine and corners). Provenance: John Sparrow (bookplate); acquired from Ximenes Rare books, 1992.

FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH. One of the most famous and charming emblem books. Between 1624 and 1757 more than 42 Latin editions are recorded. The work was translated into French, German, Italian, Spanish, Flamish, Danish and Polish. The English engraver Sturt copied the original illustrations closely. Praz, p. 84; Wing H-3350.
