8o (155 x 96 mm). Etched title and 50 etched emblematic illustrations by Jan Luyken. (A few leaves with scant spotting.) Contemporary Dutch vellum, manuscript title on spine. Provenance: D.H. (manuscript initials on third flyleaf); acquired from Weyhe, 1959.
FIRST EDITION. Each emblem accompanied by a caption, Bible quotations, and a poem. At age 26, Luyken had a religious experience which inspired him to write poetry.
