Two parts in one volume, 2o (321 x 219 mm). Woodcut arms of the dedicatee, cardinal Pietro Aldobrandini, on title-page, repeated on title for second part, 64 full-page woodcut illustrations (all in Book I). (Title reinforced on lower margin, old repair to 4-inch tear on aa3, stain on Bb2, a few ink stains to text, several cuts shaved slightly along fore-margins, some minor marginal staining.) 18th-century Italian vellum over pasteboard. Provenance: acquired from Philip Hofer, 1964.

VERY RARE FIRST EDITION of the first book devoted exclusively to the anatomy of an animal, and the first monograph on horses. "Besides being one of the foundation-stones of modern veterinary medicine, it contains a description of the lesser circulation. The admirable woodcuts were inspired by those in Vesalius's De humani corporis fabrica (1543)" (Garrison-Morton). BM/STC Italian, p. 592; Dibner Heralds of Science 186; Garrison-Morton 285; Mortimer Italian 448; Norman 1858.
