Two engraved title-borders with the arm of Louise de Lorraine at the head and two figures of women making lace attributed to Jean Cousin, 23 (of 36) woodcut "point couppé" patterns, white on black, printed on rectos only (versos blank) and 22 patterns printed on rectos with blocks of plain squares of threads on the versos (lacks C1-4, D2 and D3, E2, F1-4, G2, I1, light marginal staining, a few tears). Contemporary vellum gilt; edges gilt (slightly bowing, and minor staining). Provenance: acquired from Thomas Thorp, 1965.
FIRST EDITION FIRST ISSUE, of this highly popular book on lacework, followed by two augmented editions published in the same year, and many other editions including English and German.
