Contemporary sprinkled calf (repaired). Provenance: Friedrich August II, Elector of Saxony (contemporary collector's stamp); acquired from Marlborough Rare Books, 1984.

FIRST EDITION of this early series of Visentini's views of Saint Mark's cathedral in Venice which "showed his talent for architectural drawings and perspective" (Millard). The Iconografia della Ducal Basilica is a collection of eight large plates with eleven plans and sections of the church. Visentini apprenticed with the painter Giovanni Antonio Pellegrini and later collaborated with a number of artist including Canaletto, Tiepolo and Mengozzi-Colonna. Canaletto's patron Consul Joseph Smith commissioned a series of engravings by Antonio Visentini, and designed Smith's Palazetto at the Canal Grande. VERY RARE: according to American Book Prices Currrent no copy has appeared at auction in at least thirty-five years. See Millard Italian 153 and 154 (note).
