12o (126 x 75 mm). Etched title and 193 etched emblems by Claes Jansz. Visscher. Modern calf. Provenance: Ferdinandt Gehtner (contemporary signature on flyleaf); acquired in 1993.

Third edition. Jacob Cats and J. van den Vondel contributed laudatory poems. Visscher, poet and moralist of the early Dutch Renaissance, led the movement for the purification and standardization of the Dutch language. Zinne-Poppen, a collection of short moral pieces, is one of his principal works. It is one of the best Dutch emblems books, both for its clear engravings and strong text.
