These tables, en suite with lot 16, are almost certainly those listed in the inventory of Hornby Castle taken in May 1778, 'Four marble slabs with white carved frames' (Yorkshire Archaeolgical Society, DD5/26/29). In 1838 they were were inventoried in the 'Great Hall' as '2 carved and gilt japan'd pier tables, with statuary marble slabs'.
Their design is usually attributed to James 'Athenian' Stuart (d. 1788), the architect-designer who certainly contributed to the Earl of Holdernesse's London house, Holdernesse House, 24 Hertford Street, as well as at Hornby Castle.
