A SOUTHERN EUROPEAN RING-GUARD RAPIER
EARLY 17TH CENTURY
With slender double-edged blade of flattened hexagonal section respectively signed 'SEBASTIAN' and 'HERNANDEZ' within the short central fuller on each side at the forte, symmetrical iron guard of slender waved bars comprising cup formed of six concentric side-rings with a pierced double-shell guard on each side, long straight quillons, arms, and knuckle-guard linked by bars (some repairs and replacements throughout), later wire-bound grip with Turk's heads, and flattened pommel chiselled with waved lines en suite with the guard; together with A RING-GUARD RAPIER IN ITALIAN 17TH CENTURY STYLE, 19th century, with blade of stiff diamond section, ricasso struck with a mark, guard formed of slender bars including symmetrical cup formed of six concentric rings and a shell-guard on each side, wire-bound grip, cushion-shaped pommel
