A RARE DUTCH SMALL-SWORD WITH CHISELLED STEEL HILT
CIRCA 1660
With slender double-edged blade of flattened hexagonal section signed 'FRANCESCO RUYZ' on each side within the central fuller at the forte, iron hilt comprising double asymmetrical shell-guard finely chiselled in high relief with a battle scene involving numerous mounted combatants on the outer side and cavalry and infantry in formation in low relief on the inner side, quillon-block and terminal of the short rear-quillon chiselled en suite, wire-bound leather-covered wooden grip, shaped knuckle-guard issuing forth from the open mouth of a dog at the top, and spherical pommel chiselled in high relief with a further battle scene en suite with the shell-guard
