POSSIBLY VENETIAN, EARLY 16TH CENTURY
With tapering double-edged blade of flattened diamond section struck on each face with a pair of maker's marks, a small scimitar, and decorated at the forte on one side with a blued and gilt panel of scrollwork framing a Latin inscription and on the other with a vignette depicting a bust on a pedestal facing an armoured warrior with what appears to be a winged lion crest to his helmet (gilding and bluing worn on each face), iron guard formed of gilt flat fluted downcurved quillons each broadening at the scrolled tip and quillon-block chiselled on each face with a mask and scrolls against a gilt ground, crimson textile-covered grip with brass wire Turk's heads, and open pommel formed as two scrolls with chiselled foliage to the base and retaining traces of original gilt finish
