PARTLY LATE 16TH CENTURY
With tapering double-edged fullered blade of flattened diamond section with grooved rectangular ricasso struck with two 'X' marks on each face and a further 'X' within the fuller on each face, later ornate iron hilt comprising vertically recurved quillons, one forming the knuckle-guardm and upturned shell-guard on baluster stem, the bars grooved and inlaid with rows of silver pellets against a punched gilt ground, the tips of the quillons gilt and chiselled as monster-heads, the shell with further silver-inlaid pellets forming radiating bands all against a punched gilt ground, each band terminating in a small chiselled figure of a Classical warrior, wire-bound grip with Turk's heads, and elaborate pommel chiselled in relief with further gilt monster-heads, a gilt mask and a roundel with silver-inlaid punched border framing a further chiselled Classical figure on each side
