A COMPOSITE GERMAN SWEPT-HILT RAPIER WITH SILVER-INLAID HILT

With associated tapering double-edged blade of flattened hexagonal section, cut on each face with a deep central fuller etched with a series of letters and symbols, and extending through the tapering ricasso, the last struck with a small maker's mark on each side, symmetrical iron guard of slender rounded bars interrupted with bead-shaped mouldings comprising pointed quillon-block, long straight quillons each with bud-shaped finial, downcurved arms, triple concentric side-rings on each side, each lower side-ring with pierced iron plate and each upper side-ring linked to the knuckle-guard by a diagonal bar, later wire-bound grip with Turk's heads, and spherical pommel with four raised oval cartouche and prominent turned tang-button, the guard and pommel decorated throughout with silver-inlaid scrolls and dots, and retaining traces of original gilding in sheltered areas
