A FINE RAPIER IN ITALIAN 16TH CENTURY STYLE

With double-edged fullered blade of flattened hexagonal section, possibly adapted from an 18th century cavalry blade, incised with lines on each side and with spurious signature 'JOHANES' and 'MAILANT' respectively within each fuller, gilt oblong ricasso, symmetrical gilt iron guard comprising grooved quillon-block, upper and lower side-rings, straight swelled quillons and tapering arms, the principle elements chiselled in low relief with foliage and flower-heads, fine quality slightly swelled spirally fluted steel wire bound grip with brass wire Turk's heads and stripes, domed pommel, probably 16th century, chiselled in relief with panels of foliage and flower-heads, the top of the tang-button punched with a flower-head, and retaining traces of gilding
