A GERMAN SWEPT-HILT RAPIER WITH SILVER-INLAID HILT
LATE 16TH CENTURY
With tapering double-edged blade of flattened haxagonal section, cut on each face with a deep central fuller each bearing a series of letters and marks, oblong ricasso, iron guard of flattened bars comprising pointed gooved quillon-block, outer guard formed of three concentric upturned rings, the upper ring linked to the knuckle-guard by a diagonal bar, downcurved arms, and vertically recurved quillons all decorated with silver-inlaid tendrils, berries and flower-heads, inner-guard of plain slender rounded bars (small repair), later spirally fluted wire-bound grip with lower Turk's head, and associated flattened barrel-shaped pommel decorated on each face with a large silver-inlaid foliate spray
