A VERY FINE RUSSIAN AGATE-HANDLED HUNTING DAGGER WITH NIELLOED-SILVER MOUNTS
LATE 18TH EARLY 19TH CENTURY
With slender tapering hollow-ground single-edged blade cut with a narrow fuller along the back-edge on each side, hilt comprising narrow fluted guard, agate grip of flattened octagonal section with shaped nielloed silver collar above the guard delicately decorated with a scene of the chase involving a mounted huntsman with hounds persuing a stag with mountains in the distance, the reverse of the collar with a vignette involving an eagle and a dacha, nielloed silver pommel decorated en suite with a scene involving a wolf-hunt on the outer side and a scene involving a hunter armed with a fusil standing with his hound outside a large dacha on the inner side, in original sheath covered with green-stained leather and with nielloed silver mounts decorated with rococo ornament, the outer face of locket with a vignette depicting a castle in a wooded landscape, and single ring for suspension
