A VERY FINE PAIR OF FRENCH 18-BORE SILVER-MOUNTED FLINTLOCK HOLSTER PISTOLS FOR THE NORTH AFRICAN MARKET
SIGNED J. BTE LAMOTTE AINE, ST. ETIENNE, CIRCA 1830
With two-stage tapering sighted barrels each with turned muzzle, girdle and breech, the forward section of each barrel with rubbed gilt sunburst around the gold fore-sight, each breech-section finely chiselled in relief with a crescent moon surmounting a large trophy of arms, tangs each chiselled with foliage against a gilt ground, engraved signed rounded locks each with raised gold-lined pan with water drains, roller, and chiselled in relief with a trophy of arms against a gilt ground on the tail, cock and steel, walnut full stocks each carved with foliage and fruit behind the lock and side-plate, and inlaid with silver-wire scrollwork, silver mounts cast and chased with foliage and further trophies of arms against a gilt ground, gilt baluster ramrod-pipes, and original bone-tipped ramrods
