Lot Essay

The present work shows the church of San Giovanni Christostomo in Venice. Built between 1497-1504, it was the last work of Mauro Codussi. The date of the painting is uncertain but it is likely that Sickert painted it later from drawings that he made when he was in Venice circa 1901-04.
