Lot Essay

Iris Tree (1897-1968) was an English poet and actress, described as a bohemian, an eccentric, a wit and an adventuress. Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree was her father and, as a young woman, she was sought after as an artist's model being painted by Augustus John, Duncan Grant, Vanessa Bell, Percy Wyndham Lewis and Roger Fry, and sculpted by Jacob Epstein, showing her bobbed hair (she was said to have cut off the rest and left it on a train) that, along with other behaviour, caused much scandal.
