Lot Essay

Formerly attributed to Willem Drost (c. 1630-after 1680), this picture was first recognised as a work by the Amsterdam painter Barent Fabritius by Duits in 1938. It was later published by Sumowski, who dated it to 1653 on stylistic grounds, comparing it with Fabritius' Cimon and Pero in York City Art Gallery (W. Sumowski, op. cit., 1983, II, p. 917, no. 553).
