The interlaced 'GG' below a coronet is the brand used for the château des Tuileries. The château was originally built for Catherine de Medici by Philibert Delorme between 1564 and 1580. It was largely abandoned until Marie Antoinette re-furnished it after 1784 because she found its central location more convenient than Versailles when attending festivities in Paris.
The present table à-en-cas is chatacteristic of Riesener's simpler production for day-to-day use at Court. Related petites tables by or confidently attributed to the ébéniste include a virtually identical example stamped by Riesener, sold Christie's, Paris, 17 April 2012, lot 288 (£25,000 with premium) and a further related table delivered to Marie-Antoinette for the Pavillion Royal at Marly (later moved to Versailles), sold Fraysse & Associés, Paris, 7 December 2011, lot 177 (EUR60,000 with premium).
