This sedan chair can be firmly attributed to the Bourbon Workshops in Naples based upon its close resemblence to a sedan chair in the Museo Nationale di Capodimonte, inv. 3375. The painted panels of this, and the example which was sold from the collection of the Barons Nathaniel and Albert von Rothschild at Christie's King Street 5 July 2001 lot 10, have been executed in a similar fashion and may also be the work of Giacinto Diano (1730-1830) a specialist in the decoration of sedan chairs.
In the 18th Century when the pomp of ceremonial public display was at its height Neopolitan sedan chairs and carriages were famous for their quality and design. It is highly likely that such a grand mode of transport was commissioned by a member of the Neapolitan Bourbon Royal Family.
