Lot Essay

Meccano originated at the turn of the 20th Century when Frank Hornby, a mechanical clerk from Liverpool invented and patented a new toy model construction kit. In 1926, to mark the anniversary of his patent, Hornby introduced 'Meccano in Colours' with the distinctive red and green coloured pieces.
Robot models appear to have originated from the late 30s and inspired by the 'atomic age' were popular with Meccano enthusiasts into the 70s. This model appears to be from the 1950s where the head became more cylindrical and the body slightly tapered.
