William Arthur Smith Benson est considéré comme l'un des pionniers du luminaire Arts & Craft. En 1880, encouragé par William Morris, il ouvre un premier atelier à Hammersmith, spécialisé dans le travail du métal. En 1882, il emménage dans de plus grands locaux à Chiswick et ouvre en 1887 une galerie à Bond Street. Durant une dizaine d'années, Benson dessine des papiers peints et du mobilier pour Morris & Co. Il reprend la direction de la société à la mort de Morris en 1896, jusqu'à sa retraite en 1917 tout en poursuivant l'activité de son atelier à Chiswick. Ses créations et son travail du métal reçoivent la critique élogieuse du magazine The Studio et sont vendus dans des galeries à travers toute l'Europe, notamment dans la galerie de Samuel Bing, L'Art Nouveau, à Paris.
W.A.S. Benson is today celebrated as a pioneer of Arts & Crafts lighting design. Encouraged by William Morris, in 1880 Benson opened a small workshop in Hammersmith, specialising in metalwork. In 1882 Benson moved to larger premises in Chiswick and in 1887 he opened showrooms on Bond Street. Throughout the 1880s Benson was involved in designing wallpapers and furniture for Morris & Co. and, on Morris' death in 1896, Benson took over the direction of the company until he retired in 1917. Benson continued to maintain his own workshops in Chiswick and his metalwork and designs were critically acclaimed in The Studio magazine and sold in galleries throughout Europe, including Samuel Bing's L'Art Nouveau in Paris.
