Marvin Heiferman thinks that Sandy Skoglund belongs to these twentieth century artists having explored the power of photography, consisting in 'redefining reality by learning how to create dreams and fascinating illusions' (M. Heiferman, introductive essay to the exhibition Raining Popcorn, Sandy Skoglund at the Faulconer Gallery, Grinnell College, 2001). Skoglund creates with humor installations where characters live in strong colored settings, she afterwards photographs, breaking away from her previous researches in the field of conceptual art. In Cocktail Party, guests, glasses, walls and decorations are covered with orange apritive chips. The viewer is invited to overcome the repetitive patterns and the vivid colors belonging to the vocabulary of popular and commercial culture, to reach the sense of the metaphors suggested in Skoglund's artworks.
