Each with flared everted rim decorated in gilding and platinum with ovolos and stiff leaves, the neck with interlocking branches of trailing fruiting vine, the body with a continuous band of palmettes and stylised lotus above a band of Greek-Key pattern, the bombé lower part with a band of leafy branches above gadroons, the waisted socle and spreading foot with laurel bands and flowerheads, on an ormolu-mounted square plinth, very small glaze chip to one bombé lower part, minor wear to gilding at necks

Lot Essay

The Sèvres archives may record the present vases; on 31 December 1844, a pair of 'Medicis' vases with blue ground and decorated in gilding with palmettes were placed in store and subsequently sold on credit to the Duchess of Orlèans (the widow of Ferdinand-Philippe d'Orlèans, Prince Royal and eldest son of King Louis-Philippe I) on 21 November 1846: '2 V. medicis 3e fd bleu palmettes en or etc', see Vbb11, folio 188 Vo.
