Mercié originally intended Gloria Victis to portray Fame and a victorious soldier. Following France's defeat in the Franco-Prussian war, the victorious soldier was replaced by one in defeat. Barbedienne edited the model in seven sizes. Another example of this size, the 93 cm. high cast, sold Christie's, New York, 12 April 2007, lot 187 ($28,800). The present lot is unusual; distinguished by the addition of a plinth base fronted by clock dial.
