Lot Essay

The figures of Atlas used here can be found on a granite cistern from the Villa Albani, house of the leading roman antique collector Alessandro Albani (1692-1779). Piranesi (d. 1778) popularised this figure through his set of engravings entitled 'Vasi, Candelabri, Cippi, Sacofagi, Tripodi, Lucerne, ed Ornamenti Antichi' and had a major influence on the neo-classical style and its development. A celestial globe acquired by the King Louis XVI for his library at Versailles (inv: V5261) shares exactly the same Atlas figure.
