Lot Essay
Born in Viggiù on 26 January 1854, Angelo Bottinelli like his sculptor cousin, Antonio, studied at the Brera Academy in Milan. Known for his realistic and detailed sculptures, he exhibited the present sculpture, Prima Posa or Al Bagno in marble in 'Sala G' at the Esposizione di Belle Arti in Rome in 1883 for which he was awarded first prize (Esposizione di Belle Arti in Roma 1883: Catalogo Generale Ufficiale, Roma, 1883, p. 115). The sculpture remained in the family of the artist until 1939. Another sculpture for which he is renowned, was Seduzione, exhibited in Milan in 1886 (A. Panzetta, Dizionario degli Scultori Italiani dell'ottocento e del primo novecento, vol. I, p. 59).
