Lot Essay

An almost identical chair is in the V & A collection (W.19 - 1934, illus. English Chairs, V & A, 1970, pl. 103). A very similar chair is in the Dictionary of English Furniture, vol. I, fig. 224. The design is shown in Hepplewhite's Guide, 1787-94, pl. 4.
