Inlaid with ebony, boxwood, satinwood, amaranth and rosewood, the cornice with a feathered mahogany tablet to the centre, the stiles with stop-fluted Doric marquetry pilasters supported on trompe l'oeil plinths of conforming feathered mahogany, the original handles cast with leaves and fruit, the backboards with an early 19th century owner's or transport label inscribed 27 Rd R Rigg Bethel Street St Giles Norwich

Lot Essay

This tallboy was almost certainly inherited by Richard Rigg, the Rector of St Clements & St Michael Coslang in Norwich, who is recorded in the 1851 census at Bethel Street, Norwich, aged 45. Rigg was born in Cumberland and married a Mancunian. It is likely they spent their early years in Lancashire, which ties in with the typically North-West inlay on this piece.
