A GEORG JENSEN (EST.1904) 'GRAPE' PATTERN SILVER TUREEN AND COVER DESIGNED BY GEORG JENSEN (1866-1935)
GEORG JENSEN 'This remarkable creative output was hardly the work of one man, as many still imagine, but the perpetuation of a standard of excellence in contemporary design and technical achievement originally established by Georg Jensen's own work, then developed in new directions by seventy-six other designers who, over seventy-five years, have fostered a 'Georg Jensen look'. The look is not just that of the early classics created by Jensen himself or Johan Rohde with their simple columns or their draped garlands. It includes as well the rounded and geometric forms of jewelry designs from the 1950s and the somewhat modern shapes designed by Henning Koppel and Søren Georg Jensen in the 1970s. A standard of design is maintained, nevertheless, that is universal, whether in silver or pewter or stainless steel. The products made by the Georg Jensen Silversmithy from designs provided by a number of creative artists seem consistent in the way they respond to the time at which they were introduced. They were and are distinctly modern.' Lloyd E. Herman, Director Renwick Gallery of the National Collection of Fine Arts Smithsonian Institution Washington, D.C., Georg Jensen Silversmithy - 77 Artists 75 Years, Renwick Gallery of the National Collection of Fine Arts, 1980, p. 8
