Lot Essay

After the picture by Hans Eworth of circa 1555-1558 in a private collection (see K. Hearn, Dynasties: Painting in Tudor and Jacobean England 1530-1630, Peterborough, 1995, pp. 66-67, no. 24). In another life-size version of this portrait (private collection), the same document appears in the sitter's right hand, inscribed 'The Supplication of Thomas Hongad'; this is thought to refer to a courtier named Thomas Hungate.
