There was a folio of original designs by Robert Mylne, the celebrated architect and engineer, another one connected with the Victorian architect C. R. Cockerell, yet other finely executed designs by Sir William Chambers, James Wyatt, Soane, Vulliamy and Lancelot Brown. These were referred to professionally when a teasing problem had to be solved in one of his restorations or leafed through to provide inspiration for a small country cottage or a gazebo. The notion that an architect should have a great library of past-masters' work was endemic to classical art, Lord Burlington had used designs in this way, so had Sir John Soane, but my grandfather must surely have been the very last to do so.' This lot comprises: a late George III set of boxwood and brass drawing instruments in a fitted ray-skin case; a George III steel-mounted brass fleem in a ray-skin case; two mahogany cased sets of nickle and steel drawing instruments, one part mounted in ivory; and three large mahogany set-square rules

Provenance
The George III cased instruments probably Collins and Clarke, Cambridge, where acquired on 14 January 1956.
