Lot Essay

Burn Hall, County Durham was one of Soane's earliest projects. He is recorded as designing the cowhouse there for George Smith in 1783 but is also known to have executed other plans for the Hall.
Soane rebuilt Sulby Hall, in Northamptonshire, for René Payne in 1792-5. It was extensively remodelled in the early 1830s and demolished circa 1953.

We are grateful to Stephen Astley, Helen Dorey and Susan Palmer and the rest of the team at the Sir John Soane's Museum, London for all their assistance with the group of 18th and 19th century architectural drawings and designs.
