The group of drawings of Hanwell are signed by Thomas Hardwick, the elder (1725-1798) and by the client, Henry Berners, which indicates that these would have formed part of the contract between Mylne and Berners. Hardwick was a master mason of note, he was the master mason for the internal remodelling of Syon House, who also acted as architect on occasion. He rebuilt Hanwell Church in 1781-2.
Mylne is not recorded as having worked at Buxted Park, but eventually Sir George Evelyn did undertake alterations to Buxted but they were carried out by Samuel Pepys Cockerell (1753-1827) in 1801.
It appears that the drawings relating to Hanwell and to Buxted Park once formed part of an album of drawings by Mylne. They are all similarly presented and are all numbered in the same hand.
We are grateful to Stephen Astley, Helen Dorey and Susan Palmer and the rest of the team at the Sir John Soane's Museum, London for all their assistance with the group of 18th and 19th century architectural drawings and designs.
